Traditionally, images have been a troublesome issue in Twine. The primary reason for this is that images are extra media and included through their own HTML element and CSS methods. Twine doesn't support "using images" as part of its editor because HTML and CSS do not handle binary data.

[[Base64 Encoded Images]]Because Twine is built on top of HTML, one easy way to include images is through the use of the //`<img>`// element.
The image element uses the //`src`// attribute to point to where the image is. Its uniform resource location (URL) can be either absolute or relative. Those URLs that are absolute start with forward-slashes or a protocol name like HTTP. Relative URLs start with referencing the folder or location in which it can be found.
Example of absolute URL: "https://www.google.com/images/branding/googlelogo/2x/googlelogo_color_272x92dp.png"

To include images in Twine with HTML, an example might look like this:

Without hosting images on a public server somewhere, however, the best bet for using images in Twine would be in using the desktop version of Twine for development. Images, then, can be included using their relative location.
Similar to the //`<img>`// element in HTML, images can be included in a Twine story using CSS. The main way of doing this is with the //`url()`// style rule applied to different elements.
For example, a new rule for an element with the class of ".googleImage" might look like the following:

A common issue with using images in CSS, and with the //`url()`// style rule specifically, is that it applies to the width and height of an element. Using //`url()`// with //background-image// means that the background will be applied to the size of the content. Usually, this also requires that additional rules for //width// and //height// be needed as well.
Finally, and a more controversial way of including images in Twine, is with base64-encoded images. The description "base64-encoded" comes from representing an image's binary data as text which has a 'base' of 64. (The decimal system, for example, has a 'base' of 10. Base 64, then, has a 'base' of 64.)
Base64-encoded images are often very long strings of text and can cause a Twine story with many of them to grow very large. However, because they are text strings, the published, HTML result from Twine would not need any other files.
As they are representations of images, base64-encoded strings need the previous two methods, //`<img>`// or //`url()`//, in order to be shown.
For example, using an image element:
